There are only a couple of weeks where the sun sets behind the Chicago skyline as seen from the Indiana Dunes State Park in Chesterton, IN. The rich color is due to the massive amounts of forest fires out west.

The southern tip of Lake Michigan in Portage, IndianaTime
Sunset - I think it was about 8:15 that particular night.Lighting
The cloudy sunsets are the best. This photo was only slightly adjusted in Photoshop Elements 9.Equipment
Camera: Nikon D7000, hand held Lens: Nikkor 70-300mm Filter: Circular PolarizerInspiration
Folks local to the area go down to the lakeshore just for the sunsets. It's the best show ever! I love the fact that if the wind is right, the shots will include the Chicago Skyline - 32 miles away as the crow flies.Editing
There was very little post-processing. Just a tweaking of the color and saturation. In my camera bag
Along with the Nikon D7000 and 70-300mm VR lens, I also have an 18-105mm VR and a 55-200mm VR. I find that those lenses allow me to accomplish what I want 99% of the time. I always shoot outdoors with a circular polarizer, and if I want the water veiled I'll use a 10 stop Neutral Density Filter.Feedback
Advice? First off, go with what you know. You're heart will be in it and it'll come through in your photos. If you don't have vibration reduction lenses, bring your tripod. I always choose to use a circular polarizer so that the colors are very saturated as they are in this particular shot.
