Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in a hallway on campus for a newspaper cover for Brest Cancer Awareness month.

Time

It was taken at night.

Lighting

The overhead lighting was the only light used.

Equipment

I used my Canon Rebel T1i camera with an 18-55mm lens while laying on the ground and shooting up at the ceiling.

Inspiration

My editor and I needed to come up with a cover photo for our college newspaper for Breast Cancer Awareness month and since my Mimi was diagnosed with it when I was little and beat it. It was a cause that has always been very important to my family and I. I felt like it needed to be a photo that was unique and not the typical get a bunch of people and form a ribbon while they wear pink shirts. So I came up with the idea of having my roommate make a heart with her hands and holding the ribbon inside of it. This photo could have been created easily with photoshop but I wanted something natural and real. So my roommate held the ribbon in her heart shaped hands over me while I shot looking up at the lights. We added the Pink color in post. Her hands didn't hold the heart perfectly and to me that made the image perfect because battling cancer isn't perfect it doesn't always have a happy ending but we give all the love and fight to it. I lost my Mimi 3 years ago to breast Cancer right before my wedding and this photo still holds such a deep meaning to me and I'm so glad I took it in a raw form.

Editing

All we did was add a pink filter to make the glow pink instead of white.

In my camera bag

I carry three lenses, extra cards, a card reader, lease cleaner, battery charger, Paper and a pen.

Feedback

Honestly go for it. It's okay for things to not come out exactly as imagined. Experiment with lights and different angles. Not everything has to be shot standing up sometimes lay on the floor and get a different perspective.
