Location
This photo was taking in Zadar, Crotia at the top of the peninsula with an excellent view of the sunset. The people are running / playing on what is referred to as Greetings to the Sun which was designed by Nikola Basic. Greetings to the Sun are glass plates in the shape of a circle. Also located hear is the Sea Organ which makes sound as the waves pass through the underwater pipes. This is a popular place for people to come watch and enjoy the sunset in Zadar.Time
We arrived just before sunset and chose the location hearing it was a great place to see sunsets. We had enough time to wonder around but the toughest part was trying to decide where to be for actual sunset. The edge by the water provided a nice place to sit and view the sun setting, but didn't really offer much in the way of foreground subjects to go with the sunset which was what I was really after.Lighting
Timing was everything here, based on our travel schedule I knew I only had one sunset to get a shot. If you are watching a sunset, it seems to take a long time, but when you are trying to get the perfect shot it seems like time speeds up...pressure is on to make the best use of the light and adjust as the light changes during the actual setting of the sun.Equipment
This photo was captured using my Nikon D800 with a 14-24 lens.Inspiration
As it got closer to actual sunset, the area got busy and more people were active on the glass plates and it became obvious what I wanted to try to do. The only question that remained was could I get a good set of activity in one frame. One of the things I like best about this shot, is you can feel the motion and activity of the people. From the little kid running, the couple embracing, and the person on the cell phone.Editing
Having only one shot at this, I had to make sure the exposure was something I could work with later. I was shooting both RAW and JPG( for backup). Minor adjustments were made to exposure, saturation, and a graduated filter was applied in Lightroom. Whenever I process images my goal is to make it match what my eye saw and to keep it realistic. In my camera bag
On this trip we were traveling for 70+ days on a round the world trip so every ounce counted. For walking around town etc. I had with me a ThinkTank Streetwalker bag with the Nikon D800 body, with three lenses. The Nikon 14-24, Nikon 28-300 and Nikon 50 1.4 lenses are my go to travel lenses. Additionally, mostly for use in South Africa on Safari, I also had with me the new Nikon 80-400 VRII. I also had a second body a D7100 that I used for backup and a secondary camera when I wanted both wide and reach at the same time. For getting from place to place, I used a ThinkTank Shapeshifter which holds an amazing amount of gear in a compressed backpack.Feedback
One of things about travel photography is you never know what you will be presented with, so while it's great to have an idea ahead of time of what you might want to capture at a specific place. Be prepared to adapt to what you find. Going along with that, always keep plenty of memory space on your cards and battery left, because when a good shooting period presents it self you don't want to run out!
