What a beautiful shot! The detail is striking and the shallow depth of field really makes the shot for me. Stunning!

Location
This image was taken at an owl demonstration at Muncaster Castle in Cumbria. They are home to so many different species of owls and other birds.Time
The shot was taken roughly around mid-day.Lighting
Well, the shot was taken between frequent showers so the natural light of an overcast day really brought out the soft colours of the feathers. No extra lighting required.Equipment
The camera used is a Canon 5d Mkiii with the standard Canon 50mm f1.8 to create some lovely soft focus around the edges but retaining the sharp focus on the owl’s eyes.Inspiration
I’ve always had a keen interest with all types of bird of prey. However my budget would never allow me to extend into the costly telephoto or zoom lens to enable me to capture these stunning birds in their natural habitat. So we were more than delighted when we came across this place that showed us these stunning birds at set times and allowed us to be so up close. This allowed me to achieve some similar resemblance to a bird in the wild.Editing
Just some subtle refinements to contrast and colour. Nothing over the top, just simple touch ups on Adobe Elements. In my camera bag

It’s just important to have fun with photography. Patience plays a big role but the enjoyment of taking a picture you know that “just works” is rewarding in itself. After looking at the end result through post processing gives you such a great sensation of self satisfaction.
