Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on Fortune Chain of Lakes in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. The nearest town is Crystal Falls - about 12 miles away. Fortune Chain of Lakes is a chain of 4 lakes - this photo was taken on the first lake.

Time

This photo was taken just as the sun had started to set and right after a storm had gone to the east of Fortune Lakes.

Lighting

The lighting this particular evening was simply a great gift! The angle of the sun and the level of the clouds made for the most perfect light. Since I knew the light was fleeting, at best, I shot in auto and just kept shooting!

Equipment

Camera - Nikon D7000 Handheld Lens - 18-105mm VR Circular Polarizer

Inspiration

I love the Upper Peninsula. There is nothing ordinary. It's wild and beautiful, natural in a one of a kind way. The light truly was a gift. It was one of those lucky moments when a photographer only needs to be present in the moment. I just shot until the light wasn't creating these fantastic colors.

Editing

I'm a bit of a purist, and try to get the photo right in the camera. There was very little post-processing with the exception of color and saturation. Nature was in charge of the rest!

In my camera bag

I shoot with a Nikon D7000 Lenses include 18-105mm VR, 55-200mm VR and 70-300mm VR I nearly always shoot with a circular polarizer and also am a big fan of neutral density filters when shooting moving water.

Feedback

My advice would be to make sure you're totally in the moment. This photo was one of the first of the series. Looking to the west the clouds took on wonderfully soft colors. Look around - change your perspective and keep shooting! Light like this doesn't last long.
