This is an African Serval. I was able to get up close and personal with this beauty at our county fair. The Exotic Animal Wildlife Center near here called Tanganyika had her out there integrating her with human population. They are not domesticated but they are experimenting with socializing her and others in the area of modest human contact. She was about the size of a Bob Cat and was silky soft to the touch. She was very calm in spite of the commotion of children and others that she was attracting with her beautiful presence!

Thank you! She was a lot like a domestic cat except her meow was a tad more on the serious and intimidating side!

Behind The Lens

Location

I took this shot at the Sedgwick County fair a couple years ago. This is an Africa Serval. She was on a leash with a handler from The Tanganyika Exotic Wildlife Refuge near Goddard Kansas, or about ten miles west of Wichita. This wildlife park is mentioned often and visited by Jack Hanna of television wildlife documentary's and also "Jack Hanna's Wildlife" on many television networks across The United States. She was about the size of a medium size dog and very gentle but would spook easily if moved upon quickly.

Time

This shot was taken in late July and at about 6:30 in the evening.

Lighting

Nothing special about the lighting or settings. As I peered through the view finder I liked the way it looked so I just went with it.

Equipment

I took the shot without the use of a tripod or any special equipment.

Inspiration

A love for animals of all kinds attracted my eyes to this scene.

Editing

Nothing special was done in this shot that I can remember.

In my camera bag

I now have three camera's in my "bag" I have a Casio Exilm, a Sony Cybershot with a 25mm wide angle lens and a Canon PowerShot sx 400 IS. The last one I mentioned is my most recent purchase and by far my favorite. The camera I used on this shot was the Sony Cybershot!

Feedback

I encourage anyone taking a similar shot to be prepared to take many snaps/clicks/shots in order to settle on the one that suits your taste. Take a few from a few feet away and then if you can change up by getting closer and or changing the angle of the shot!
