Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo during a creative photo shoot with some fantastic friends and models.

Time

This was taken about 5:00 pm. The model, Alexis Sharpe, was in a tiny, shaded kiddie swimming pool. I was worried about the light because it was the middle of July and pretty hot and still very sunny out!

Lighting

Because it was still so bright outside I needed to keep her shaded as much as possible, we used a large scrim/reflector to soften the light as much as possible. I really wanted the greens and blues to pop as much as possible.

Equipment

I used my Sony a200, hand-held, no flash. f/3.5, ISO 100, 18mm

Inspiration

The shoot theme was Sea Jewels, with something of a mermaid theme. I've wanted to shoot something involving water for a long time and when this opportunity came along I couldn't wait to see what creativity happened!

Editing

I did some processing in Photoshop Elements. The light and colours were great, so all I did was sharpen those elements a little more.

In my camera bag

Sony DSLR A200 with an 18-70mm lens. A Tamron 70-200 mm lens (that I rarely take off! I love it!) and three SB 800 speedlights.

Feedback

Be sure you have plenty of room to move around and have a stepladder available! This was shot in a small kiddy pool and I had to climb up a stepladder to get her in the shot. Be relaxed and know you might have to talk a bit louder than usual to direct your model because her ears are underwater! Mostly, have fun and be creative!
