Location
This photo was taken in Yamashita Bayside, Yokohama, Japan. Yokohama is the 2nd largest city after TokyoTime
This image was shot approximately 1-2pm during a harsh winter.Lighting
The sunlight was directly above the birds, and this allowed me to zoom in straight on the birds, and created an effect of a blur background. The clarity of the photo could be attributed to the strong sunlight that day.Equipment
I used a AF-S Nikkon 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6 G ED VR together with a Nikon D7000. To ensure that the camera did not shake and the focal points were pre set, ie: the birds, the camera was mounted on a tripod to achieve this.Inspiration
Born being and raised in tropical Singapore where there are no seasonal variations, this was my white Christmas at Yokohama Bay. Though the bayside was buzzling with activities and had a high throughput of visitors, my attention was drawn to these 3 birds, who stood in solitude and tenacity in braving the cold. They were unfazed, resting on the stern line, counting down to Christmas I had no clue that this image would travel round the world and has actually become one of the most well liked pictures in my collection. The fact that it has received so many “likes” is testament to God’s blessing on my works and it will continue to propel me forward in my photography journeyEditing
An image should be kept as original as it can be. Although I do post processing, it is kept to a minimal to bring out the essence of the pieceIn my camera bag
Anything I can find. I am currently a student at the University Of Southampton, being a university student; I can’t afford to own expensive equipment. I have been fortunate to be able to work in collaboration with Camera makers where cameras are loaned out to me, sometimes for their prototyping and sometimes for their test marketing As I do not have a specific equipment, I rely on my skill set instead. From experience, I firmly believed that it does not matter what camera or lens one has. While it is a privilege to own a good equipment, if you can “shoot”, even if the equipment issued to you is below par, the job still could be done if you understand what it takes to capture a winning shotFeedback
Firstly, appreciate even the mundane things in life. Sometimes, it’s the common things in life, when captured with a discerning eye, that would form the x-factor, just like the 3 birds. Secondly, be attentive to the detail. There was actually more than 10 birds sitting on the stern line but these 3 caught my attention in the way they were aligned and against a background that is so serene and calm Thirdly, get creative, come up with a concept that is not usually done under such circumstances and just be yourself.
