I took this photo on Trail 179 Cathedral Rock (Back O' Beyond) in Sedona, Arizona.Time
I trekked out around 9 p.m. with a friend to capture the beautiful Milky Way.Lighting
Funny thing is, I forgot to bring my soft light, so I used my iPhone to light-paint the juniper tree in the photo.Equipment
I used my trusty Canon 5D Mark II, 17-40mm lens, a Benro tripod and mount and my iPhone to light-paint the juniper tree.Inspiration
I LOVE Sedona - that's why I live here - and I'm all about hiking, nature and dark skies. I've always loved this particular juniper tree on the trail and was hoping to get a shot like this... success!Editing
I never like to work on my photos too much. Some say that's not great for selling, showcasing, etc - but I say - that's what keeps it real. I only play around with levels, etc in Photoshop raw filters and then let the rest be.In my camera bag
I carry my Canon 5D Mark II everywhere I go and love my 24-105mm, 17-40mm, 14mm and 8mm fisheye lenses - PLUS I never leave home without my iPhone 6 and olloclip 4in1.Feedback
Best advice is to get a great app to see where the Milky Way will be (I use "GoSkyWatch"), have a STURDY tripod and wide angle lens... play with your settings and have some patience and definitely find dark skies. You can go to darksky.org for a list of the best communities. Luckily, Sedona is one of them!
