Behind The Lens

Location

Where did you take this photo?"The image was taken in my home-built tabletop studio, Bangor, Northern Ireland...I am a self-taught photographer having bought a second-hand Canon 300DSLR (rebel) to create a new hobby as at that time I was heavily addicted to alcohol, something I have given up 6yrs ago.

Time

What time of day? "Knife Through Fork" is one of my most popular images as everywhere I display it, it attracts lots of attention, It was around mid-afternoon I think when the image was taken, It took some time to saw off the prongs of the fork..I get people asking me how many layers in PS it took, they are somewhat disbelieving that I actually created the image from nothing.

Lighting

Anything worth sharing about lighting? "The lighting was simple really...2 home studio tabletop lights with 1500w daylight bulbs attached.

Equipment

What equipment did you use? (Camera, lens, tripod, flash, other?) The image was shot using a Canon 300DSLR, a Velbon tripod with zero flashes, the lens I do believe was an 18-55mm Canon kit lens

Inspiration

What inspired you to take this photo? I had been researching Andre Kertez at the time, I suppose he has an effect on my photography as looking back at my images from that time lots of kitchen utensils were photographed.

Editing

Did you do any post-processing? if yes, tell us about it! From memory just the bare minimum in photoshop... color, contrast etcetera. I'm not a fan of too much post-processing, I try to get as much correct in-camera, shooting 35mm cameras and TLR cameras makes you make every image count...I transfer that to digital.

In my camera bag

What equipment do you normally have in your bag? Today I usually have a Canon 40DSLR, Canon 50mm, Sigma 17-210mm, and a Canon 17-40L lens...a flash and Cokin filters as I love long exposure landscape photography.

Feedback

Any advice for others trying to capture something similar? Think outside of the box, look at the world from different perspectives.
