Behind The Lens

Location

I took this shot in Bridgewater, NJ.

Time

Definitely at night

Lighting

Lighting was everywhere! Just had to wait for the noise

Equipment

I believe I used my Canon 7D and my Canon 50mm f/1.8 with a tripod

Inspiration

It was summer and right around the 4th of July holiday. Firework shows were in every town and I knew I wanted to get my camera out there! I also knew I wanted to try something new and not take your "usual" firework photo. I found info on a technique using the focus-ring to achieve some pretty unique photos; and I just had to try!

Editing

Not much, at all. Just some cropping

In my camera bag

First thing to go in is always my 6D. (I no longer have/use the 7D I took this shot with) And depending on the assignment (Am I running around or am I in one place for a while?) determines how many lenses and other gear I bring. A full kit usually carries my 50mm f/1.8, 17-35mm, 135mm f/2.0, and my 70-200mm L4. Other essentials would be an off-camera flash (I use the canon 580 EXII) with a set of ETTL triggers and a small 24"x24" softbox. And definitely a reflector or two. Because, sometimes you only need natural light!

Feedback

The technique I used with the focus-ring was fairly simple: Manual Focus Set focus close to Infinite (not quite to Infinite, start a little before. If your focus-ring stops rotation (doesn't continuously spin) start focus just a bit from the end of its rotation.) Now, just wait for the fireworks! When they go off, quickly spin your focus ring to the opposite end (out of focus). It's all about timing! Frame your shot before you begin to the best location in the sky to capture as ugh action as you can. You don't want to be moving your camera around. Oh! I almost forgot! Use a tripod!!!
