Behind The Lens

Location

I took this image at Oxbow Bend in the Grand Tetons National Park, Wyoming.

Time

I took this photo at the end of June, and got to Oxbow turnout to shoot sunrise, so this was just after the sun hit the mountains, about 5:50 a.m.

Lighting

I was really hoping for a few clouds to add some color and interest in the sky, and did manage to get that one cloud to pass by.

Equipment

I shot this with my Nikon D 800 on my tripod (Bogen Manfrotto, carbon fiber)I had my 24-120 mm lens on and shot this at 70mm. ISO 320; shot at 1/30; f/22

Inspiration

I had been to Oxbow Bend on my first trip to Wyoming a few years earlier and this time was there with my sister. It is one of the classic photography scenes that is on everyone's list, so I was there to experience it again with my sister.

Editing

I always use Camera Raw to process the Raw image, then take the image into Photoshop and from there after I crop, clean out the dust spots and use levels & curves, I often go to Nik Color Efx Pro 4 plug-ins to sharpen the image with their Tonal Contrast Filter. I also often use the Nik Viveza plug-ins to brighten or darken a particular section.

In my camera bag

On this trip, I brought my converted infared camera. I also had my 80-400mm lens to shoot the wildlife in the Tetons and at Yellowstone. The 24-120 mm is my main lens. When not needing the long reach of the 80-400mm lens, I often use the 70-300mm lens. I have a circular polarizer which is used for outdoor shooting a lot.

Feedback

It pays to get there early, as it is a well photographed spot. There are little paths down to the water, so if you are early, you can see where the best place is to set up. It was dark when we arrived, so a little flashlight would be helpful. If you have time, try to shoot for more than one morning so that you will get different sky which can change the scene dramatically.
