Behind The Lens

Location

My husband and myself with a small group of friends went on a sailing trip in the Whitsundays in Queensland, Australia. This image was taken in the beautiful Butterfly Bay.

Time

We had out Yacht moored around the corner and hopped into the dingy to do some exploring. Everywhere I go my camera comes with me, even though salt water and electronics don't mix, it was a calm day so the chances of having the camera soaked or fall overboard were extremely slim. The time of year was early March so the weather was still quite warm and the cyclone session was over. QLD doesn't have day light savings so the mornings start early. We were usually up by 5.30am. This image was taken midd morning while exploring the area.

Lighting

It was an overcast day with stormy looking clouds that I thought I could do something with and make look dramatic and ominous.

Equipment

I used a Nikon D70s with a 18-200 lens. Hand held with settings- Manual Mode, Exposure 1/1250, Fstop 3.5, Focal length 18 and ISO 200.

Inspiration

This looked such a beautiful, peaceful and tranquil place. I loved the trees and their placement with the small one in the distance in the centre. There were small rays and large shoals of small fish swimming in close to the shore. The dark patch in the front centre of the image is a large shoal of fish. they were fascinating to watch. The water was so clean and clear I was hoping to get a shot of the fish and rays. I also loved the dark and stormy sky

Editing

I love wide panoramas and to get this you need to take multiple shots. The panorama consists of 4 images stitched together. I use one program to stitch and another to process. This one I processed as a HDR. I did two versions, one colour and the other (this one) B&W. I much prefer the B&W version, it has greater impact.

In my camera bag

It really depend on what I am shooting and where I am going but to just walk out the door I have my Nikon D300 with a Nikon 18-200 lens with a UV filter on in a small camera case. In the zip pouch on the front I have a spare battery, spare card or two, remote shutter release, polarising filter, lens cloth and half a paint brush to clean any dust, dirt or sand off the camera. This sounds a lot but fits nice and compact and will cover me for just about all situations. If I am going away I will pack all my gear in a bag. A wide angle and a macro lens. Metz Off camera flash and a large pack of rechargeable batteries and battery charger….also batteries for the remote. Half doz cokin filters, ND 8 & 11 filter AND the manual for those times that I just don't know why it's not working. I also have a sigma 120-400 lens and the trusty tripod. I take all the other gear for that "just in case" but 90% of the time it's just the camera and often tripod.

Feedback

The best bit of advice that was given to me was "if you see something that looks like a great shot, STOP and take it". We are often in too much of a hurry these days and don't stop to take that minute out of our lives to do what we love, in this case photography. On this particular day I had the "I couldn't be bothered". I am glad I did bother take it….
