Is this where all the Viking spirits live? Just an incredible shot with tremendous stopping power. You have that "mojo" thing.

Location
In Torres del Paine National Park, Chile - one of the world's most fascinating places for a photographer to "waste" weeks of time.Time
First touch of sunrise. However, the peak will give you amazing photos throughout the day - and on full moon nights.Lighting
Watch the weather. When we went to bed the night before, the weather was bleak, cloudy, grey, and forgettable. The mountains, if you saw them at all, were nondescript blobs. However, on a hunch and with the urging of my wife, I set up two tripod-mounted cameras facing the peaks through our B&B's windows. At about 5:30 AM my wife shook me and said, "We have mountains." It had snowed during the night, and the morning sun was painting the peaks orange and yellow and gold and WOW!Equipment
Canon EOS-1Ds Mark III; Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS set at 180MM; f13 @ 1/40. ISO 400. Carbon tripod by Manfrotto and ball head by Kirk.Inspiration

Increased the saturation and opened up the shadows. In my camera bag
Since I travel internationally for my job, I try to carry the least equipment necessary for where I will be. This changes with almost every trip. This photo was taken on January 5, 2009. Bodies: Canon EOS-1D X, and Canon 5D MK III. Lenses: Canon EF70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM, Canon EF24-70mm f/2.8L II USM, Canon EF14mm f/2.8L II USM, and a Canon 2x tele-extender. All fit nicely in my non-descript "Crumpler Seven-Million Dollar Home."Feedback
Go to Torres del Paine. • No need for a special tour. Use the internet to purchase hotel or B&B housing in or just outside the park. Also purchase round trip coach transportation to your lodging. Purchase an airline ticket to Tierra del Fuego, Chile. • Many groups will try to sell you guide service, special photo tours, etc. Don't bite. There will be guides available at the hotel, and the weather will change what you will want to have provided. •If you are a hiker, plan to hike around the mountains. The best views are from the trails.
