Thanks so much Gary. Yes, I live about 100 mi. North of NYC and it takes me 4 hrs. To get there. It'd probably be at least a 5 hr. drive, and some of those places might have tons of ice on their paths and steps.

Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in Watkins Glen State Park in New York's Finger Lakes region.

Time

This image was taken at 7:20 a.m. in late June.

Lighting

As Watkins Glen State Park is a gorge, there are deep rock walls that have been carved by water. The sun at this early hour of the morning does not shine through the gorge, leaving a brighter background beyond the gorge walls.

Equipment

I shot this image with my Nikon D 800 and I used my 24-120 mm lens, at a focal length of 48 mm. I used a custom WB of 4900K. ISO was 500, f/14 and exposure was 1.6 sec. The camera was on a Bogen Manfrotto carbon fiber tripod. I believe that I also had a circular polarizer on the lens.

Inspiration

Over the past few years, I had photographed the gorges in the state parks around Ithaca area on two occasions. The winding water that had carved each gorge yields many beautiful scenes. I had heard about Watkins Glen but did not get a chance to go there on the previous visits. My friend and I decided to go there and see the Watkins Glen gorge, one June.

Editing

I do use Photoshop for all of my processing. I process the RAW files in Adobe Camera Raw and then I use a lot of the Nik plug-in filters to process all of my images. My favorite standard plugins are from Nik Color EFX Pro 4, where I use their Tonal Contrast. I also use the Viveza 2 for selective lightening and darkening of the image.

In my camera bag

I often have my 24-120 mm lens, my 70-300mm lens, a polarizer, graduated neutral density filter. While I do have a remote shutter release, I generally use the timer when taking long exposures. Depending on where I am shooting, I may bring my fisheye lens, or my Nikon D 100 converted IR camera. Extra batteries and CF cards are always there in the bag as well.

Feedback

When shooting long exposures to veil the water, it's good to try varying shutter speeds to get some different looks of the water. While I don't think that direct sunlight would get in this part of the gorge for much of the day, it was important to get there early to be there ahead of other park visitors. I did not have to spend a lot of time waiting for people to get out of my shot, or did not have to get rid of stray people in photoshop. Using a polarizer helps cut down on the light and can take the reflection off the pool of water. If it is even brighter, having a neutral density filter will also cut down on the light, enabling you to use a longer exposure.
