A very cool turtle all covered with tube worms, barnacles and even her own set of pilot fish. A tiny, swimming reef.

That must have been an amazing experience! I'm so glad you got her untangled and it's wonderful to know there are people out there like you who care and are making a difference. Fabulous photo! Congrats on your Finalist award!

Splendid capture! I love the accompanying story!!! I wish more photog's on VB would include a small narrative... It makes the capture that much richer. Thanks for sharing!

Location
This photo was taken off the coast of Bahia Magdalena, Baja California Sur, MEXICO; during an expedition to unhook live sharks from commercial fishermen's longlines as part of Pelagic Life's "The Call of The Shark" conservation project. While searching for live sharks, we encountered this turtle tangled on one of the bouys. We were able to set her free and were rewarded with a long photo shoot. She stayed with us for quite a while. This was my favourite shot from the encounter.Time
Must have been somewhere around late morning to mid-day, if my memory doesn't fail me.Lighting
No strobes were used. Only natural light.Equipment
This photo was shot with a Canon 5D Mark II and a Canon 14 mm, f2.8 lens inside an Aquatica housing.Inspiration
I love photographing marine animals. This was a great opportunity to photograph this turtle.Editing
Minor color adjustments in Photoshop as far as I remember. In my camera bag
When shooting in the ocean I have always used the canon 14 mm lens as I have focused on photographing large animals, generally sharks. On land I generally enjoy shooting with a 50 mm, f 1.8.Feedback
A bit of luck, lots of patience and in this particular case the element of surprise. I had to dive under her and surprise her while she was distracted with one of my fellow divers to get the shot I wanted.
