This is the Mexican Canyon Trestle which is 323 feet long and 60 feet above the canyon floor.
The allure of the lumber in the Sacramento Mountains brought the railroad to New Mexico before the area was even mapped. The Alamogordo & Sacramento Mountain Railway traveled between Alamogordo and Cloudcroft and was built in 1899 which was 13 years before New Mexico became a state. Moving at a slow crawl for much of the trip, trains pulled passengers and cargo up steep 6 percent grades and through hairpin curves. The trains traveled 26 miles over 58 trestles and climbed to 8,600 feet, making the A&SM railway the highest standard gauge track of its time. The trains stopped running in 1947.

This is my first fish eye lens photo in my gallery, it was a fun shot and surely made the whole trestle come into view.

Not a place that I want to cross! Unless it is on foot walking down and back up the other side.

I have one good photo that is looking into the crossbeams but I would love to be on the canyon floor and get some shots looking up. I also will not walk across the top, much to high and no handrail etc.

Thanks for teh wonderful comment and the "Great Find" peer recognition. I like the story line and especially find the last sentence meaninful as the trains stopped the year I was born.

I've shot this trestle many times, The fish eye treatment gives the it a neat twist.

It did add a rather unique perspective to this wonderful photo oportunity. I would think a snow covered trestle would make this composition even more interesting. Thanks for your kind comment.....

I Very Nice Image Indeed!! I think that Shay Locomotives most likely pulled the trains.
