This photo was taken in the field behind my home in Kingston, Ontario on Christmas eve.Time
We had been hit by a decent ice storm a couple days before. The temperature dropped almost immediately after the storm, causing the ice to stay frozen to the trees for nearly a week. On Christmas eve just before sunset I headed out across the field behind my house to see the horses and to catch the sun lighting up the ice on the trees.Lighting
Having the sun come out after an ice storm presents a unique opportunity for photos. The sun setting against the frozen trees makes everything glow, I wanted to capture the beauty of it.Equipment
I used a Nikon 7100 with a Nikon 24-70 lens.Inspiration
I have always loved horses and I really like having a live subject in my photos. Having the horse set against such a beautiful backdrop seemed to bring balance to the shot.Editing
I use Lightroom and Photoshop to edit my photos. However, very little post processing was done with this photo. I try to get things right in the camera as much as possible. In my camera bag
I normally carry my Nikon 750 and my 24-70mm and my 50mm. I also keep a Nikon sb900 flash and my pocket wizards handy if I want to add some dramatic lighting to any of my shots.Feedback
The opportunity for great photos is always there, no matter the time of year or the weather. Canada is well know for it ever changing weather, especially during the winter. Wild weather bring about opportunities for some amazing photos if you don't mind braving the elements. If you always have your camera with you, you will never miss the opportunity to capture a great photo.
