Behind The Lens

Location

Out in the field next door to my house.

Time

It was the golden hour. I had gotten off work and was out with my camera in tne evening.

Lighting

I love warm sun glow in the evening light... it's my favorite time to shoot, the light is not too harsh and it the right set up the natural light can really make a big impact in your macro shots!

Equipment

This was shot using my Nikon D7000 with my 105mm dedicated macro lens @ f5, iso 400, ss 1/60.

Inspiration

Well, I've always been fascinated with macro photography... I always zoom in... so I got the lens. I was fascinated with the macro bug shots on Viewbug but found my family and friends didn't care so much for close ups of flies, beetles and spiders etc so I set out to photograph the friendliest bug I could think of.... the lady big!

Editing

Macro photography (of bugs) always requires some cropping and straightening, this shot was no exception. However, beyond that there was very little editing, as this shot in jpeg (before I went RAW) I used Photoshop elements 11 for my editing.

In my camera bag

In my bag... usually I pack for the event so I pack accordingly. If I plan to shoot macro, I try to only shoot with my macro lens. If it's landscapes I'm after I'll take my 18-200 (for the widest angle) and my 50mm. If I'm going to my son's footfall game I'm going with my 70-300.... keep the weight at a minimum!

Feedback

If you're interested in shooting macro there are many ways to do so (filters, rings, etc) but if you are serious then you can't go wrong getting the lens (60mm or 105mm) and read a lot about how to light your subject! Beyond that bugs are bugs, they move, crawl and fly... shoot continuous and you too could get some amazing shots!
