Behind The Lens

Location

I live next to a Conservation Area in Woburn, MA, just outside of Boston. The area is blessed with a lake, a pond and a cattail marsh. In the fall when the nights are cool but the water is still warm there is always dew on the spider webs. I didn't have to go very far from my house to find this web.

Time

I started out around 8:00am on a late September morning and headed towards our Community Gardens across from a Cattail Marsh. I shoot wherever I go so I move fairly slowly. It was nearly 9:00am before I got to the gardens less than a mile away. I shot several spider webs that morning but this was the best one.

Lighting

It was a bright overcast morning so the dew was not drying very fast. The light was even and soft and even though the background was in shadow, there were several different colors. I thought B&W was less distracting.

Equipment

Canon EOS DIGITAL REBEL XT with a Tamron 90mm macro lens, hand held.

Inspiration

I love dew on anything; spider webs, leaves, flowers, etc. So in the autumn I watch the weather and try and get out early enough to catch it.

Editing

I did a little sharpening and then turned it to B&W.

In my camera bag

I usually carry two Canon Rebel bodies, a Tamron 90mm macro, a Sigma 18-200 zoom with image stabilization, a Sigma 10-20 wide angle zoom with image stabilization, at least two external flashes, a pop-up reflector, a pop-up diffuser, a table-top tripod, small scissors and knee pads (I do a lot of Macro of small wildflowers), and a good lens cleaning kit. My bag is half camera bag on the bottom and half backpack on the top so I usually have a bottle of water, insect repellant, sunblock, pen and notebook, power bars, a small first aid kit, maps, field guides, etc. with me. My full size tripod straps to the outside of my backpack.

Feedback

Make sure you get out EARLY in the morning, check for a very humid night with cool temps or vegetation near water.
