Poisonous – All parts of this plant are poisonous, but the red beans are by far the most highly toxic. This plant contains Erythrina alkaloids, which include the curare-like beta-erythroidine.

The unusual red flowers of erythrina flabelliformis are long (up to 3 inches) and tubular; each component has one large upper petal which curves round to enclose four smaller lower petals. The inflorescence is a cluster of several dozen individual flowers, pointing upwards when young then downwards when fully grown.

Truly magnificent...to find this vivid red flower in a dry desert setting had to be priceless! And how interesting that something this beautiful is so very lethal. Thanks for including the name and information.

In Mexico the seeds are sold a beads called Colorines often used to make necklesses. It is best to only wear them around your neck and not put them in your mouth for any reason as they have caused hallucinations, vomiting, convulsions and even death.

The burst of color was how we found this plant way off the trail. Thanks for the Top Choice peer recognition.
