Thanks Alwolfe. Was my first trip to Ruby Beach. Hope to go back in 2018.

Behind The Lens

Location
This photo was taken at Ruby Beach on the Olympic Peninsula in Washington, USA. This was a really special trip for me as it was my first solo camping trip. I had never been to this area before but had seen images and was blown away by the landscape. I haven't done a lot of long exposure seascapes but it is a genre of photography that pulls me in.
Time
I took this photo on May 29th, 2014 at 9:30pm. Being a landlubber I remember being a bit freaked out about the tides. I had to cross a small stream that flowed into the ocean and I was nervous about being stranded and having to sleep out all night until the tide went down again. There was no one else there. A wild feeling to be surrounded by such beauty and be witnessing it all by yourself.
Lighting
If there had been anyone else around they would have had a good laugh. I was bobbing and moving from the left to right, up and down, trying to get the sun to peak out just the right amount. I love sun flares and rays. Was the perfect night to experiment.
Equipment
Nikon D7000, Nikon 18-105, Focal Length 18mm, F18, ISO 400, 1/250's. Tripod, 2 second timer.
Inspiration
I have seen some amazing seascape photographs from all over the world. This is a place that is just close enough to drive to but remote enough that it hasn't been over photographed.
Editing
The second best part of photography for me is the time spent in front of my computer. I know that isn't most photographers favorite part, but truly I think I am a frustrated painter. I can't draw stick men. Don't even think of handing me a paintbrush. But put me in front of my computer with a complete digital darkroom and forget about me for hours and hours. I use everything from Photoshop CC to all of Nik, Topaz, Alienskin, OnOne to tweek and try to make an image my own. Many more programs I am dreaming of one day owning.
In my camera bag
I have a Nikon D7000, Nikon 18-105, Nikon 50mm, Nikon 105 Macro, Nikon 55-300, Sigma 10-20, Sigma 150-500, Nikon SB700 (2), ND Filter, Tripod, Wireless remote, flashlight... My new Sony A6000.
Feedback
Go. Practice close to home with similar conditions. I did a bunch of night city photography to get a feeling of shooting in the dark. Helped me to learn how to focus in the dark. Read your tide charts. Nature is a powerful thing! Take your time to inhale your environment, look through your viewfinder and take as many pictures as your card will hold. Turn your camera in the portrait mode, work the scene until there is no more light.
