This is an immature Giant Mesquite Bug or 5th instar nymph. This photo was made in Sabino Canyon, Arizona in first week of June.
These colorful bugs are wingless nymphs of the Giant Mesquite Bug or Leaf-footed Bug. Nymphs, like adults, produce a noxious-smelling fluid when disturbed. They are protected by these potent chemical weapons which they advertise to potential predators via their more than bright coloration.

I had my choice of many photos to choose from and found this one to hold the most interest just because of the leg being transparent in the strong sunlight : ~))

I was in the right place at the right time to catch this last nymph stage before it turns into a bug of not much color but is as big as your thumb.
