Behind The Lens

Location
It was a cold winters night in the northern New South Wales town of Narrabri. Five dishes of the array stood quietly in the dark. I had come all the way from Queensland to photograph them.
Time
The moon had left the evening sky and it was still early in the evening, around nine PM. The beautiful Milky Way stretched out across the inky black sky like a diamond necklace on black velvet.
Lighting
If you decide to try some light painting with a flashlight, you need to make it fast other wise your foreground subject will be blown out.
Equipment
I spread my tripod out and mounted my Cannon EOS 5D Mk 3 full frame camera. My lens, a Cannon 16-35 mm pointed skywards. No filters required for night shots .
Inspiration
The challenge of taking a good, but different image of the night sky always excites me. I would love to shoot the auroras also but, because of where I live I have to be content with the Milky Way. It's a gorgeous compromise however, and fills a soul full of wonder.
Editing
Using Lightroom to make the image pop. I decreased the shadows and added some vibrance and clarity. Noise reduction is also a must for such shots.
In my camera bag
I keep the equipment in my bag to a minimum. I have three Canon lenses and a few filters. My lenses are all Cannon ones, 35-105mm, a 16-35 mm and a 100-400mm. I use a polarising filter and ND filters only.
Feedback
Phases of the moon play a key roll in Milky ways shots as do the seasons. Skies are clearer after rain and so will your view of the Milky Way be also a chilly winters night might have less dust in the air. You need a high ISO of between 1600/3200. A fast lens with the aperture wide open and the exposure must be less than 30 seconds or you will get star trails.
