Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in a metro park near Toledo, Ohio. We went there to use the river and shoot with sunset as a backdrop. While we waited for the end of day, we played with some poses on the hood of my Jeep.

Time

This was in early evening, late afternoon as we were waiting to do a sunset as a backdrop.

Lighting

This was entirely natural light.

Equipment

I used a Nikon D7100 with a Nikon 24-70 at 48mm f/3.2 1/500 sec ISO 400

Inspiration

Emma is an experienced model who specializes in Alt/Glam shoots. We have worked together and have fun experimenting with locations and poses. With no pressure for a guarantee of a specific outcome, or a deadline, we both have the opportunity to experiment and learn as we go.

Editing

This was processed in LR5, mainly for skin softening, I reduced shadows and increased exposure just a touch. There is some boost to clarity on the tattoos, and some contrast overall.

In my camera bag

I have since this shoot upgraded to a full frame (D610), but my go to lens is still the 24-70 f2.8. For outdoors I often use the Nikon 70-300 as well. When lighting is used, I have Westcott Rapid box, an off brand flash and an SB700 flash.

Feedback

Not sure about advice, but what I learned from this was that while preoccupied with things like exposure and posing, we often miss some great things like i this case, the reflection on the hood. Don't get so wrapped up in the composition that you miss these bonuses.
