Behind The Lens

Location
This is my home beach of Crantock in Cornwall, south west UK. When there's swell its a perfect longboard wave and I''m in the water. If not, it's a magnet for sea bass so I'm fishing. Basically it's my playground and always inspires me to leave the house whether with my camera, surfboard, fishing rod, BBQ...... It can be glorious sunshine and flat calm or huge winter storm swells, I'm always drawn down the hill to put my feet in the sand.
Time
Sunset!! Walking down with my girl to watch a few friends catch a last few waves. Had to stop and set then tripod up on the way though.
Lighting
I often try to shoot from a low perspective when shooting landscapes as I like images to have an alternative viewpoint to what we he see when simply standing and looking. In this case however, I raised the tripod to help emphasize the colours of the sky reflected in the tide pools.
Equipment
This was the last shot taken on my first trusty 550d, that survived a whole year of travelling with me around South America. After this I finally saved up enough money for the full frame 6d. The shot was taken on a tripod and is a HDR.
Inspiration
As I mentioned before, my home beach never fails to inspire me. Every time I step over the dunes I am greeted with a new subject, with the light, tide and surf always changing.
Editing
The shot is a HDR. Three shots merged. The shots were only a small variation in exposure time so my final image basically reflects what i could see with my eyes.
In my camera bag
I try to cover all possible situations within my limited budget. A macro (tamron 2.8), a mid range (canon 24-105) and a long range lens for birds or surfers (sigma 150-500). There are lots of other bits of kit I'd ultimately love but I still need to be able to buy food. I always carry a mono-pod and tripod and am never without my remote. I also carry a great little blower for the horrible moment when a bit of dust gets on the sensor. Spare batteries and other boring gubbins. Thats it.
Feedback
Be outside all the time. Go home only enough to keep your loved ones from getting cross. Stop and sit often. I always find that if I take a moment, shots that i hadn't noticed jump out at me. Often, so does wildlife, which you never seem to find if you're actively looking for it.
