Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Niagara-On-The-Lake, Ontario, Canada on Airport Rd.

Time

This was taken first thing in the morning in September, during this time of year fog in the morning is quite common. I worked in Niagara-on-the-Lake and was heading home from my night shift, so the photo was taken around 7:30am.

Lighting

Everything was lined up perfectly for this shot. I was lucky enough to pull the car over just as the sun was coming through the tree. Had I been a minute or 2 later, I would not have got such an opportunity. No need for flash, or fancy equipment, I was just at the right place at the right time.

Equipment

I used my Canon T4i, handheld, using a 18-55mm default lens that came with the camera.

Inspiration

I was shooting grapes in the vineyards after my night shift to try and capture the fog on the Vineyard. I could not get the shot that I was trying to achieve in the Vineyards so I decided to call it quits and head home as I was very tired from working a long shift. As I headed down Airport road, I looked to my left and saw the lone tree with the fog and saw the sun starting to peak. I knew something good was going to come from this and parked the car as fast as I could and ran to the farmers field and began shooting until the sun peaked and fog was gone.

Editing

For this I shot as a single RAW shot. I processed it in Adobe Camera Raw, increasing the exposure on the fence area, and had to do little to no work on the photo. I always shoot RAW because it offers so much detail for photos and captures the colours that the camera see's. I find JPEG does not capture all the details a RAW file does and it distorts the image through its own processing in-camera.

In my camera bag

I am a low tech guy. My equipment bag is a small carrier bag that holds 3 lenses and my camera. My camera is the EOS Rebel T4i and the lenses that I carry are an 18-55mm (Landscapes), a 50mm (Portrait), and a Canon Zoom Lens 75-300mm (Wildlife and Close-ups) I am always armed with my cellphone as well to capture photos on the go. I have a Galaxy S7 programmed to shoot in RAW, but I love using it for timelapse and slow motion video.

Feedback

Patience, and Mindful awareness. Most people drive around not looking at their surroundings, and go in auto-pilot mode. Keeping your mind free of distraction and paying attention to the landscape of the area opens many opportunities for shooting a great landscape shot. Timing is also important, knowing when the sun rises and sets each day, allows you to figure out the golden hours, and the best times to shoot. Finally I believe a little luck is needed to get a great landscape shot. One does not need fancy technology to capture a great photo, but being mindfully aware of surroundings, having patience, and a little bit of luck, are absolute key to landscape photography.
