I took this photo in an area where most people would probably walk right past it and ignore it's photographic potential and beauty. I am always looking at everything with my photographer eyes, and imagining what it would look like being shot with a wide open aperture!Time
I generally almost always shoot during the golden hours, and this shot was no different. I met the model and her mother at around 4pm, and given that this area is protected from the harsh sun and is more of an 'open shade' spot, we started shooting straight away.Lighting
This was shot in 'open shade' - which is an area heavily shaded from direct sunlight.Equipment
I used a Canon 6D body and 135L f2 prime lens, handheld. I did not use a tripod, and I generally only use a tripod for landscape images. All of my images that contain people in them, were shot hand held. I do not use a flash or reflector outdoors. I don't even own a reflector!Inspiration
I wanted a new addition to my Emotion Series - which is a personal photography project of mine, and I had this vision in my mind from the beginning. This image is titled 'Patience'.Editing
This image is hand edited using Adobe Camera Raw and Photoshop CS6. I used levels, gradients, masks, and solid colour fill layers. I absolutely love blend modes, and so I'm always changing the blend modes of layers to get the look that I'm after. I recommend searching YouTube for explanations on blend modes and how they can work for you. Blend modes are your best friends.In my camera bag
I normally only use my Canon 6D body with 135L f2 prime on it. However, I have been caught out before not having the right lens on me, so now, wherever I go, I always make sure I have my Canon 6D, Canon 7D, 70-200, 24-70, 105mm macro, 40mm pancake and 30mm 1.4 lenses in my bag - along with multiple memory cards and three fully charged batteries.Feedback
My advice is to really look, not just see, the world around you, locations, etc. Some of my favourite spots were ones I randomly happened upon, and could have easily been ignored by me, had I not really looked at the potential. I get inspired by locations. Getting as low as you possibly can, at a wide aperture, will help you get not just great background compression, but also foreground compression, and I am a BIG fan of foreground blur!
