The photo was taken at home. I'd recently been reading about the importance of lighting and also thinking about how difficult it is to get it right. My daughter just happened to be day dreaming out of the window and fortunately I saw what might have the makings of a good picture and so snapped on off before she noticed I had my camera.Time
There was actually nothing special about the time of day, it being sometime in the afternoon. So lighting wise it wasn't offerring much except that the bright but cloudy day gave a fairly soft light coming through the window.Lighting
I loved the way the light have been partly obscured by a tree outside, only allowing some of the light to catch her face, appearing to fall off onto her left cheek.Equipment
In DSLR terms my camera and lens are pretty basic, it being a standard Sony Alpha SLT a55 with a standard Sony 18-55mm lens. I usually have my camera set on Aperture Priority operating in RAW format. I use RAW format since I don't have filters or probably to skill to get the right exposure setting fast enough to capture moments.Inspiration
As mentioned earlier I had been reading about lighting and am often deterred from even taking a picture if the light doesn't seem to offer anything. My daughter loves to have her photo taken and the sight of her lost, innocent look was too good not to try and capture it.Editing
I often have to resort to doing some post-processing. At first I use to think it was cheating but now feel it makes up for my lack of equipment or skill. Besides I feel it is more important to capture what you have seen in your minds eye, even if that involves some after work to improve the look. In this case I wanted to isolate the lighting that had so beautifully fallen on her face and so darken the edges to remove the ambient light. In my camera bag
I usually keep a small compact Canon camera with me. It doesn't have a zoom lens but does odder full manual control, quick start to photo ready and does RAW images. I always take the Canon out when I have my Sony, in case I have my longer zoom lens on and need to take a quick shot at 35mm.Feedback
I probably should say take lots of pictures but I tend to find that I don't take as many as I should, as I tend to spend a lot of time looking for a perspective that adds something different to the shot. What is important in my view is to look at other peoples work to give you something to try and emulate or just to be inspired by. Have confidence in your ability but accept critic as a way to improve, and most of all.... enjoy!!!
