Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Almonte, Ontario, a picturesque community just outside of Ottawa. The occasion was the annual Puppets UP! parade, a highlight of the weekend festival. I was positioned at the lower end of Mill Street so that the parade coming down the hill would fill the background.

Time

The parade was at 2:oo pm - not the best time for photos, but the light was coming in from camera right, at least providing a bit of definition.

Lighting

It was bright enough to light the entire scene, and pick up all of the glorious colors in the parade.

Equipment

Taken hand-held, with my Nikon D7000, 70-200 f/2.8 lens, shutter speed 1/800, aperture f/5.6

Inspiration

The parade is a photographer's delight. Color, costumes, and happy people make it a wonderful experience. I wanted to capture the spirit of the parade, and use the hill in the background to fill in the color and activity.

Editing

Dropped the highlights a bit, upped the shadows a bit, and increased the vibrance and clarity. Not much work required.

In my camera bag

For events like this I usually carry a D700 with a 24-70 f/2,8, and a D7000 with the 70-200 f/2.8. This gives me the ability to catch individuals up close with the D700, and get larger crowd shots from a distance with the D7000.

Feedback

Always scout an event ahead of time. Find a location where you have a clear view of things. Make sure the sun is not behind your subjects. Engage your subjects, and have fun!
