Behind The Lens

Location

My photo was taken in Los Olivos, in California

Time

It was getting towards lunchtime when we stopped off at a little cafe for a drink, I remember it was hotter than hot and it was such a relief to be out of the car as we were travelling back to Los Angeles (where we lived at the time) having been on a trip to Solvang & Ojai with my parents who were visiting from England.

Lighting

The photograph was taken just with the natural light of the day, it was almost noon, so the sun was pretty high in the sky and it was mid September in 2012 which was an unbelievably hot summer - every day was 100º for about 4 months

Equipment

Nikon D90, 55-200mm stock lens which was hand held, no flash

Inspiration

My husband has become my muse, especially for black and white images. He is not so fond of my work because he says the character in his face shows his age (he will soon be 51), but I love the character I bring out in him and so do those that know him. It is very hard to take a bad shot of him and thankfully unlike my children, he does not hide from the lens

Editing

I use Photoshop for all my post processing. I like to take my original colour image and make it as dramatic colour wise as I can before finally converting ti to black and white. I am no professional and often my work is trial and error, but I find that if I keep to this one simple rule my black and whites generally achieve the result I desire.

In my camera bag

These days I have upgraded to a full frame body and I carry a 50mm prime, 150-500mm tele, 24-85mm stock lens, I have extension tubes, a variety of filters, trigger releases, and a decent tripod

Feedback

The only advice I can offer is to not be afraid to experiment. Make notes about what works and what doesn't. I always shoot in raw and I always shoot a lot. I am never without my camera, that way I can never miss anything.
