Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at a place called Springbrook National Park, about an hours drive south of Brisbane, QLD, Australia. This cave is known as "Natural Bridge".

Time

It was taken mid-morning/midday. Usually it's not a great time for landscape photos with the light being really harsh, but a heavily forested place like this is more forgiving for shooting during the middle of the day.

Lighting

The lighting in a cave like this, close to the mouth is a real challenge. You have the bright light poring in from one side and the caves darkness closing in from the other. The light spilling in from outside helps to capture some details of the cave walls and roof but is very easy to overexpose. It's a challenge I am proud to say both the camera and my post processing handled rather well I think.

Equipment

Nikon D5100 camera and an 18-55mm kit lens. I also had a budget Inca i530 tripod.

Inspiration

I love capturing landscapes almost as much as I love the journey and experience of seeing them. I'd seen a few other examples of photos of this waterwall and cave and really wanted to see it and see if I could shoot my own take to really capture not just the water pouring through the cave roof, but also the feeling of the location itself.

Editing

It has been some time since I processed this now, so the finer details are a little hazy. I was (and still am) very much learning about post processing and this photo was handled using a number of graduated filters. Both to lower the exposure of the cave mouth and forest as well as to bring out some of the details of the cave roof and walls. The power of digital grad filters is that they can work to darken the exposure or inversely can be used to increase the exposure and I used that heavily on this image. Aside from that there was the normal white balance, saturation, contrast tweaks.

In my camera bag

At the moment I have a Nikon D7100 with an 18-55mm kit lens and a 55-300mm telephoto lens. I also usually bring along my D5100 body. I also have an Inca i530 tripod and an SB-600 speedlight. I carry an ND1000 filter, a variable ND filter, a CPL filter and a cheaper variation of a Conkin filter holder with some cheap ND grad filters that I almost never use. Cleaning cloths, lenspen, lens caps, lens hoods, spare memory cards and that's about it.

Feedback

Sometimes you don't have to look far to find an interesting landscape to photograph. I look for inspiration from other photographers around my area and then try and capture a different/unique variation of a location.
