Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Yosemite National Park. This is a location located within Yosemite Valley & it's a really hot spot for tourists & photographers.

Time

I took this photo just as the sun was setting around 6pm

Lighting

At this particular location the best time is either sunrise or sunset. As the sun is setting the light from the sun sits on the face of El Capitan which is the mountain to the left. If you catch it at the right time the mountain face looks like its covered in lava.

Equipment

I shot this photo with a Nikon D610, Nikkor 28-300mm lens & a Manfrotto tripod & a Tippen Variable ND filter

Inspiration

I live near the park so I see this location all the time & always pass it up because of the high volume of tourists. On this particular evening the traffic was low with the exception of a few photographers. The sun was setting & there was a thin layer of snow on the ground which made for a great contrast.

Editing

I actually chose to bracket 5 photos for this particular image. I used Photomatix, Lightroom & Photoshop for post processing.

In my camera bag

Depending on what I'm focusing on...A must for me is a mid range zoom lens (Tamron 24-70) & a couple of prime lenses (14mm & 85mm). I love to do long exposure so without a doubt a variable ND filter & a tripod. I shoot with 3 different bodies. The Nikon D800, D610 & if I'm doing any trekking or hiking I go with the Nikon D7000.

Feedback

A tripod with the ability to go really low is always a good thing to have. Water proof boots always seems to help to get into the areas the average person can't get to. When I find a location I like I walk around for a few minutes until I find the perfect spot. I usually try to visualize in my head what I'm trying to accomplish so that I'm not scrambling around at the last minute. If your camera can bracket than it's highly recommended. Keep shooting & if you are happy with the outcome than thats all that truly matters.
