Behind The Lens

Location
As an amateur wildlife photographer, I quickly developed an interest in birds of prey and in particular with owls. Although my primary wildlife focus is mammals, living in Barrie, Ontario allows easy access to locations where birds of prey reside. As I began to connect with other photographers in the area, I began to learn of a well populated area near home. The day of this photo I was visiting the area of the Minesing Wetlands near Angus, Ontario. This was my first time scouting this area for Snowy Owls. At the conclusion of the day, on route home, a phone call from a fellow enthusiast mentioned that there was a Barred Owl close to where I was.
Time
This shot was taken around the 3pm hour in January.
Lighting
When I started photographing this owl, it was perched on a branch for a good 10-15 minutes. Although the lighting was ok, the shadows of forested area was restricting the light. The owl left the branch and flew to the other side of the road. Again, the lighting was not bad but the sky breaking through the background of the winter barren trees was an over cast distraction. But then, as it looked like it was going to fly, I locked focus in time to catch it leaving the branch to hunt something in the snow below. As it dropped into the clearing, the front light caught the chest and feathers offering a warming tone to the colours of this awesome owl.
Equipment
This shot was captured with the Sony A77 using a Sony F2.8 lens. With the camera crop, this shot was a 450mm equivalent. No flash fired and the camera was set in Aperture Priority (F8), ISO 400, a small exposure bump at 0.3EV and 1/1250 second for shutter speed.
Inspiration
This shot was all about "right place, right time'! A quick phone call and just happening to be in the area made this possible. At the time, I was also learning to recognize the movements of the birds to try and predict that the bird is going to fly. As a "newbie" it was mostly luck on this shot!
Editing
Colour adjustments and detail extraction was applied using NIK Color Efex Pro 4 particularly to the feathers. Some minor touch up was complete is Photoshop to removed some distracting elements of the grass reeds. I am a huge fan of the NIK Plugins and enhance most photos with the software package.
In my camera bag
I don't pack light! I carry 2 camera bodies, Sony A77 and A77 MKII. For wide angle/landscape I often reach for the Sigma 10-20mm F3.5. Next in focal length is the Carl Zeiss 24-70mm F2.8 and the Sony 100mm F2.8 Macro. I also carry the Sony 70-200mm F2.8 and the lens that I shot this photo with and certainly my most used lens, the Sony 300mm F2.8 often paired with a Sony 1.4x Teleconverter. The back breaker lens that won't fit in the pack is the Minolta 600mm F4. Great reach if you don't mind adding 12lbs to weight. Also a tough lens to pack in carry on with more and more airlines now checking both checked and carry on! Gitzo carbon fiber are my "go to" tripods and a Wimberley Gimble Head II is normally perched on top. The often over looked item in many camera bags and highly recommended is a spare roll of toilet paper! :-)
Feedback
I became a "collector" of camera gear before I became an actual "user". Although I was getting a decent list of gear, I was primarily shooting on a trip or 2 each year. I was taking the occasional evening course on photography and heading out to the local camera club meeting. It took me a while actually get out and use the gear. When I first heard "F8 and be there" quoted at a course, it made so much sense. You have to get out there and shoot, you have to know your gear and how it handles in various shooting conditions. Once you are out there, you get to meet great people with similar interests who will often share locations and perhaps even split the fuel costs of an outing. As cliche as it sounds, the best camera IS the one that you have with you!
