Location
Portland, Oregon Eastside Esplanade.Time
I attended a class thorugh Camera World on taking photos of the Portland City Nights. It was in the evening not long after the sun set.Lighting
Since it was not long after the sun set, the sky was still light and had color. The water was quiet and still and the lights from the city reflected beautifully on the river. In the upper left hand corner you can barely see a planet. I don't remember which one it was, but it was bright.Equipment
I used a Nikon D3000 and Nikon 50-200 lens. I used a tripod. I did not use any flash.Inspiration
The city waterfront was the class subject. did want to get the boat in the photo because it looked so peaceful sitting on the water; however, I didn't want to make the the focal point. I also wanted to include the clouds, sky and planet.Editing
I cropped the photo to put the boat off to the side more. I may have enhanced the colors. In my camera bag
I usually bring my Nikon D3000, all of my lenses and my tripod.Feedback
I highly recommend a tripod when trying to capturing city lights. I think it's a good idea to have a secondary focal point when taking a photo like this. The boat in this photo makes the photo interesting without drawing from the primary focal point of the river and the city lights.
