Behind The Lens

Location

The location is Kew Bridge Steam Museum, London. Massive Victorian pumps were once used to extract water from the river Thames.

Time

Late morning sun on a summer's day allowed beautiful shadows through the windows.

Lighting

In situations like this, if the natural light looks good, I tend to leave it alone.

Equipment

Modest Nikon D300 on a tripod with an 18-55mm f2.8 lens.

Inspiration

I was able to negotiate a few days at the Rambert School of Ballet and Contemporary Dance in London, capturing images of the students in training. Whilst there, acting on a tip off, I negotiated some time in the Steam Museum and attached Smithy. The location was immediately inspiring with its massive Victorian machinery.

Editing

The images have virtually no post processing.

In my camera bag

I usually carry a Nikon DSLR with spare body, an 18 to 55mm f2.8 Tamron lens, a 28 to 105mm f3.5 to 5.6 Nikon lens and an 80 to 200mm f2.8 Nikon lens.Along with 2 Nikon speedlights I have a silver/ white reflector and a flash/continuous light meter.

Feedback

Be enthusiastic. You will get more volunteers and have a better reaction when you are wanting favours, such as use of a location. Be generous to volunteers, asking them if they would like any images for their own use. Keep your promises, such as supplying a complimentary book, or prints.
