The skeletal remains of West Pier, Brighton, opened in 1866, various fires and storms have been destroying the pier since 1975.
I had in mind to visit Brighton and feature the old pier in a long exposure shot of some kind; unfortunately, I forgot to pack various of my needed ND filters! I cobbled-together what I had with me, to maximize exposure time in full daylight.

Behind The Lens

Location
Taken from the beach at West Pier, Brighton, Sussex, UK.
Time
19 Apr 2014 at 15:43.
Lighting
This was a bright April day, so to stand a chance of keeping the shutter open for an extended time without over exposing or blowing-out highlights, Neutral Density filters were absolutely required.
Equipment
Unfortunately, I forgot to pack various of my needed ND filters and holder! I cobbled-together what I had with me, to maximize exposure time in full daylight. Pentax K5 DSLR + Sigma 10-20mm, sturdy Slik Pro tripod, available filters attached to the lens using electrical tape!
Inspiration
I have a thing about entropy! I had in mind to visit Brighton and feature the old enigmatic pier in a long exposure shot of some kind before it rusts into the sea for good.
Editing
Being that I shoot RAW, Adobe Lightroom 5 was used to adjust contrast, sharpening and bring the white balance back to what I saw on the day.
In my camera bag
Pentax K5, Sigma 10-20mm with standard hood to avoid flare, lens cloth, electrical insulation tape - it's gaffa tape for photographers!
Feedback
With long exposures, as usual the subject is important but an interesting / dynamic sky is also key. It is ideal if the scene has clouds and better still, sufficient wind to animate them. Similarly if water is present, said wind will usually provide the 'milky' effect of the smoothed-out waves. If anything, the more elements of the composition that are subject to movement, the more the main rock-steady focal point seems to stand-out.
