The technique for this shot( Thank You Bryan Peterson) is to get a glass serving dish. Use something to prop it up about 10 inches or so leaving the center clear. fill with water about 1/2 inch then add cooking oil. The darker the oil the better I find. mix the solution gently to avoid making bubbles. As you know water and oil do not mix so you will get random patterns of oil dropplets floating on the water surface. sometimes they clump up like this photo. Now to get the color contrast put something very colorfull under the center of the contraption. You willl focus on the oil and not the colored item underneath it. I recommend manual focus as most cameras have a hard time with auto focus with this. As for lighing you can play around. One note though do not flash right onto the mixture. The glass reflects, the water and the oil also reflect and it may get washed out or have flash reflections on every dropplett....Unless you are shooting for this effect. Enjoy and have fun creating art.
