Watkins Glen State Park in upstate New York.Time
It was mid-day.Lighting
It was a slightly overcast day. The sun would peak through every once in a while enough to cast a few shadows but since it was late spring, the light had a decided light green cast as it filtered through the spring trees overhead. By the time we finished the hike, it was raining so the light did not last long.Equipment
I used a Canon Rebel XSi with a Sigma 18-200mm lens set at about 30mm, f22 at 200iso. It was set on a sturdy tripod (I have a couple and don't recall which one it was).Inspiration
I love waterfalls and this is one of the most iconic and beautiful ones in this area. It is an almost two mile hike from top to bottom of the Gorge Trail with a decent of 400 feet and over 800 stone steps. There are 19 waterfalls and 200' cliffs. This particular shot is the classic shot. Because it is such a visited park, there were a lot of people even though it was before the start of summer vacation and threatening rain to boot! I stood for almost 20 minutes waiting for there to be no people on the bridge or on the walk leading up to it.Editing
I used both Lightroom and Photoshop PS2. I did a little color correction in Lightroom as the new spring trees cast a decided greenish-yellow light to everything. It still has that spring look, but not so overpowering. I brought up the shadows a bit and brought out the detail in the light veil-like falls on the left.In my camera bag
I usually carry two camera bodies, both Canon Rebels (I have arthritis in my hands and need a lightweight camera), my Sigma 18-200mm, a Sigma 10-20mm, a Tamron 90mm macro, two off camera flashes, one each pop-up defuser and reflector, a table-top tripod, small scissors and knee pads (I do a lot of Macro), and a good lens cleaning kit. My bag is half camera bag and half backpack so I also usually have a bottle of water, insect repellant, sunblock, pen and notebook, power bars, first aid kit, maps, field guides, etc. with me. My full size tripod straps to the outside.Feedback
Patience, patience, patience! When you are in a highly visited area and want to get shots without people or crowds, you need to plan ahead. Find out the times of low volume of visitors and plan accordingly. Don't let the threat of bad weather keep you away. This is when you get the least crowded times at iconic locations, so take advantage of it. Luck favors the prepared!
