Location
This image was taken during a portrait night at my local photographic society. I was a night I ran, arranging the models, lights, etc to help introduce members to studio photographic. I can be a very rewarding experience showing and helping people about photography. Not to mention a learning experience.Time
It was taken in the evening between 7pm and 10pm, but being in a studio environment it could have been taken at any time.Lighting
I really like high contrast, deep shadows and mood, which doesn't always go down well with a lot of people. However, I like it. It is Raw, deep and pure and presents a very dramatic and bold image. For this I used a one light set-up to generate a Rembrandt style look. Using a reflector to soften the shadows just a tad, but deliberately using the hair to hide the eye in the shadows. I used a Canon 5d Mk III using a 24-70mm f2.8L Series lens. No tripod was used, but there was a studio flash with soft-box and a reflector.Inspiration
I've been trying to capture an element of raw emotion. Something dark but compelling. Something different from a soft portrait for head shot.Editing
Yes, most of my portrait work goes through an element of post processing. Starting with Lightroom for global edits. Generally I boost contrast and clarity, and pull back vibrancy and saturation a tad. The into Photoshop where a combination of Frequency Separation and dodge/burning is used to create the final image.In my camera bag
Good question - A Canon 5d mk III, 24-70mm, 70-200mm and a 100mm macro. If I think I need lights, then a few Yongnuo speedlites which give great performance.Feedback
Spend time with you subject, get to know them and enjoy the experience. Don't rush!
