Behind The Lens

Location

This picture was taken in the shadow of Windsor Castle, in England, on the day of the historic first state visit of an Irish president.

Time

It was late morning and thankfully the weather was fine, but not too hot.

Lighting

Shooting the Royal family almost always involves shooting with natural light at public engagements, and I hesitate to use any level of flash as I want natural images...and professional flash feels far too intrusive.

Equipment

I've been using a Nikon D7000 coupled with a Sigma 50-500 lens for a number of years...this gives great flexibility and negates the need for two bodies. Ironically however I have replaced the 'Bigma' with the newer 150-600 'Super Bigma' and now have a second D7000 with a couple of pro Nikon lenses for wider use.

Inspiration

Due to family links in Windsor I had shot several royal events in Windsor, but never caught HRH Prince Phillip in a way I liked. This was also a period where his advanced years were catching up with him, and his health was causing concern. This was his first appearance in public after a bout of illness and I was determined to catch him while I could.

Editing

The picture was processed in Lightroom. Nothing to fancy...conversion to black and white and some tweaking of contrast levels brought out the detail.

In my camera bag

Crikey...that would be a long list! I'm sure my camera bag would be classed as unsafe in the work place! Usually two bodies, at least three lenses including a Samyang 8mm fish eye for when I'm feeling creative!

Feedback

Advice? This image was all about luck. But you can give yourself better odds by being prepared. Find out routes, the schedule for the day etc....and just be ready! Sometimes things change very quickly and you don't want to be caught texting with your camera on the floor when it all happens!
