Behind The Lens

Location

Near Rye Harbor State Park in Rye, New Hampshire

Time

Just after sunrise.

Lighting

Even though there weren't any clouds in the sky, which I usually prefer for the drama they can add to the scene, the sky was a gorgeous orange color just after the sun came above the horizon that made for some very nice light.

Equipment

Canon 1D MkIIn, Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 lens, Gitzo Mountaineer Carbon fiber tripod, and I used a 3-stop graduated neutral density filter to balance the exposure between the bright sky and darker foreground.

Inspiration

Initially what inspired me to take this photo was the way the sunlight was hitting the large boulder. I wanted to capture that light along with the ghostly look of the water created by a longer exposure.

Editing

That being said, in my opinion, what the camera captures is just the beginning. I do try to get the best exposure and composition I can while at the scene, but where I finalize the vision I have for an image is during post processing. I currently use Lightroom 5 to catalog my photos as well as make any adjustments to exposure, white balance, etc. Then, after I've done a few basic edits and corrections it's off to one of the Nik Collection by Google plug-ins such as Color Efex Pro 4. Each and every one of my images is finished using the Nik plug-ins.

In my camera bag

My current body is the Canon 7D and the two lenses I currently own are the EF 17-40 f/4L and the 70-200 f/4L IS. At least one micro fiber cloth, spare batteries and memory cards, my B+W circular polarizer along with a selection of graduated neutral density filters, and remote shutter release. Also, a couple of small bungy cords for holding branches and plants out of the way, a rocket (bulb) blower, and knee pads. I like a lot of lower compositions, and the knee pads are great for saving my knees and my pants from the rough granite here in NH. One last thing I never leave home without, my tripod.

Feedback

The most important piece of advice I can give for someone wishing to capture a similar photo is to get their butt out of bed! Half of good landscape photography is about being in the right place at the right time when Mother Nature is showing off. For sunrise, be there at least 30-45 minutes before actual sunrise, and for sunsets don't pack it in the minute the sun dips below the horizon. Especially if there are clouds in the sky. Quite often the best, most dramatic light will come as much as 20-30 minutes before or after the sun rises above or dips below the horizon. Next, buy a good tripod and use it. For a shot like this you're going to need a long exposure, in this case 6 seconds. To capture the smoke-like appearance of the water while still having the shoreline boulders and cobbles sharp, the camera needs to be perfectly steady.
