Location
This photograph was taken of the Arthur Ravenel, Jr. Bridge between Charleston and Mount Pleasant, South Carolina. I was participating in a workshop with Richard Bernabe, an International landscape, wildlife and travel photographer and author. I learned so much during the workshop.Time
The group of attendees where taken to the east and south side of the bridge and hiked across of very rocky terrain to the edge of the Cooper River. We got set up about 5:15pm, but had to wait until almost 7pm before we had decent light to capture with the bridge. This was my first really decent long-exposure image I had produced, which really softened the water. Also, because of the amount of time we had to wait, I was able to practice getting the cables focused.Lighting
This had been an unusual day, in that there was a blanket of clouds most all day. The clouds had broken up when we first arrived at our shooting location, but by the time we had to wait for the sun to set, the blanket had formed again. I actually think this produced a great image, allowing the cables, which are lit by the lights on the bridge, to stand out against the dark sky. Also, the way the clouds lifted slighted after the sun had gone down below the horizon produced a nice line between the smooth water and the dark sky.Equipment
This was taken with a Canon EOS 6D; Canon EF24-105mm, f/4.5m/1.5ft Ultrasonic Lens; Manfrotto 290 Xtra Tripod; no flash was used.Inspiration
I had actually tried to take a photo of this particular bridge of a couple of days before this particular workshop began. but I was on the wrong side of the bridge. I had seen many images of the bridge at sunset and was hoping I could get an image that was a little different than the others. This particular image had become one of my all-time favorites, due to the lighting involved and the clarity I was able to capture. Since I took this image, I have realized the importance of the leading lines this image provides and it makes me happy.Editing
This was a RAW image that I only did some minor clarity and slight color slides to get the image equal to what I saw.In my camera bag
I pack my primary camera, which is my Canon EOS 6D. Attached to the camera, I almost always have my Canon EF24-105mm, f/4.5m/1.5ft Ultrasonic Lens. In my case I also have my Canon 75-300mm, f1.5m/4.9ft lens, my Canon 17-40mm Ultrasonic wide-angle lens, and my Canon Macro EF 100mm, f1/2.8 IS USM lens. As a landscape, macro photographer, you never know when you'll run across something interesting to shoot. I also carry 2 extra batteries, about one 32GB card is in may camera and I carry two extra 32GB and two 16GB cards, as well as a 2x extender. There is also a Hoodman, a four-way flashlight, a wireless remote, a digital flash, lens hoods, microfiber cleaning cloths, air blower for lens, as well as packets of Deep Woods Off, which is needed all the time when you live in the South!Feedback
I think you really need to use an app, such as The Photographers Ephemeris to determine where the sun will be setting, This picture was taken near the Harborside East, which is a very popular wedding venue. Be sure to wear some very sturdy hiking shoes if you go to this location. This image was captured on the first day of March, 2014.
