So beautiful. I just want to get lost on that beach near that water.

Behind The Lens

Location

Sunset Beach, New Jersey

Time

5:00 PM

Lighting

Natural light during sunset.

Equipment

Nikon D5100 with a Tamron 28-75 lens, tripod mounted.

Inspiration

I was hoping for a nice, cloudy sunset shot, and had selected the decayed pilings for my foreground interest. As the sun went down all trace of clouds disappeared, but I stayed on the beach and prepared for some timelapse shots anyway. The decayed wood held my attention moreso than anything else nearby, so I decided I would strive for a minimalist type of shot with the beach/wood, partially smooth water and sunset colors in the sky. I still find the bare beauty in this image inspiring.

Editing

Lightroom and Photoshop with Topaz Labs Clarity, with some high-pass filter sharpening to finish. I have processed this image from scratch 3 times now, and find different details each time.

In my camera bag

My Nikon D5100, Tamron lens, and a 105MM f/2.8 macro lens, SB600 Speedlite, and wireless remotes.

Feedback

This is a pretty obvious rule-of-thirds landscape with an obvious foreground component, for which I am unapologetic. I don't think every landscape has to be exceptionally clever, but in this case I believe I found something that I haven't seen anywhere else. I am a huge fan of negative space and this image really meshes with my view of the world. I think it's important to have at least a minimal understanding of _why_ you are attracted to a certain type of image; it becomes easier to then spot candidate shots while out and about.
