It was taken in the ballpark of thirty to forty-five minutes after the actual sunset.Lighting
Lighting was definitely a challenge with this shot. It probably took twenty to thirty shots to get one that worked enough for what I wanted. I started maybe 15 minutes after sunset.Equipment
I used my favorite camera (Kodak Easyshare Z981) it's a great camera and will do pretty much anything you need it to. It was made before Kodak went bankrupt, but out of the cameras I have used I haven't liked one as much as this one. You can get one used for $120 now. I paid $400-$500 for it new, I would do it again if it meant that I could get a new one that was as good as it. Also a simple tripod is necessary for this. Nothing incredibly fancy.Inspiration
I can't say that I typically have inspiration to do shots. With my photography (including this shot) I end up finding the shots, not making or getting inspired to do them. After the sun had passed it was still pretty light out because of the lower lying clouds reflecting off of the city lights from Virginia. Then I thought it would be a good idea to try some long term exposure stuff just to see where it could go. I found the shot this way.Editing
With normal photography there is post editing yes, but this one easily was the most difficult to post edit. All of the clouds were a darkish blue and some gray. The water was a mid to dark grayish blue. The entire rest of the night was spent on this one for the most part. Originally I had posted this and the red was a purple color and after maybe twenty minutes of looking at it online I decided to post edit it again and that's where the red color comes in. I also had to make some shadow in the water because it looked too bright for my liking. In my camera bag
Usually I just have a camera (If preferred its my Kodak Easyshare Z981). Very rarely I will have a tripod and if I need to I will bring along my cellphone to use as an external flash. By no measure am I digging deep for photography, but I can still say that it gets the job done.Feedback
Get creative and look to invest maybe several nights into something like this. I have tried before to get an exposure shot. I have also tried since and it just really depends on how the conditions are. I would say that it is a much easier thing to do if there are city lights to work off of with clouds light pollution. Also don't get frustrated at it not being something that works right away. Another thing I could say would be advice would be to focus on contrast and vivid colors when doing this.
