I've taken this same foto, but like yours because of it being Black & White. Good Capture

Behind The Lens

Location
Gateway Arch, St. Louis, Missouri
Time
The worst time of day for me...around 3 pm. There was some clouds to block the sun, but I recall the sun was pretty bright on that day.
Lighting
Looking upward, I knew that I had the sun to deal with. That and the reflection of the sun off of the steel structure. But I wanted to have a little bit of glimmer from the sun to highlight the texture of the Arch. It was a fine line drawn to not over expose the picture, or even shadow the whole arch.
Equipment
Canon EOS REBEL T2i. 18-55 mm lens. No tripod.
Inspiration
The enormity of the Arch, I really was not sure I would be able to get a decent shot at such a close range. But I loved the perspective when I stood close to it.
Editing
I honestly do not remember if I did or not, as it is a picture I have had for years. If anything, maybe cropping.
In my camera bag
I use a Nikon D7100 now, though my Canon EOS REBEL T2i is a back up. I have 3 Nikor lenses, 18-55mm, 40mm fixed, and 55-300 zoom. Manfroto tripod. 2 batteries, and a lens cleaning cloth.
Feedback
Try different perspectives. Do not be afraid of the size of what you are taking a picture of because there are so many variations you can do to make the photograph your own. I would recommend taking the shot at a better time of day, but if you are stuck with the sun high in the sky then you should wait until clouds roll by or you can hide it behind the structure.
