Behind The Lens

Location
The photo was made in Kings Canyon National Park in northern California. There had been some local forest fires and you could smell the smoke on the morning air.
Time
The photo was made early in the morning. I had been working in the desert of southern California and I had the weekend off so I got up very early and drove up to Kings Canyon. I arrived at just after sunrise and noticed there was a smell of wood smoke in the air. I drove into the park and found a place to park the car and started walking among the redwoods. The sun had risen to the point where it was shining down through the smoke and making these awesome shafts of light. The trees were silhouetted which added a bit of mystery to the giant trees. This was my favorite shot from this day.
Lighting
In this particular instance I happened to be at the right place at the right time. The right time is usually very early in the morning or late in the afternoon and evening. You just have to sacrifice to get up and put yourself at the right place. I tried to make the most of the silhouette effect and the sunshaft effect.
Equipment
I used a Nikon D70 camera with a Nikkor AF-S 24-120mm 1:3.5-5.6 G lens and "The POD" beanbag attached to my camera base for my tripod.
Inspiration
The shafts of light were part of my bucket list of photos that I had always wanted to create. I am a sucker for silhouettes and water reflections and sunlight shafts because they are creations of nature that are totally random and never the same. You cannot duplicate these effects the same way in a studio. You just have to capture them when and where nature presents them.
Editing
I did not do any post processing, just a bit of cropping.
In my camera bag
Today I carry a Nikon D700 and a Nikon Df. I put a Nikkor 80-400mm VR lens on the D700 and a Nikkor 24-120mm VR lens on the Df. I always have The POD (beanbag that screws into the base of the camera or the long lens) which I use to stabilize my setup. This way I can use a fence post or a rock or the side of a column in a cathedral or the side of a tree trunk as my tripod.
Feedback
Get up early. When it is rainy or misty, that is sometimes the best time for capturing images. Don't forget to make lots of images from different angles and heights and then you have lots of possibilities to sort through later. Remember that even though a lot of places have become icon locations and we tend to think they have been photographed to death, if it is the first time you have been there, strive to find your own special angle or perspective or something that makes the image stand out as yours. Your view is just as important and unique as all of those other folks.
