Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at Studley Royal Deer Park, near Ripon in North Yorkshire

Time

I had been following a herd of Red Deer trying to get the stags isolated from the herd, when this one turned and faced me as the herd kept moving away

Lighting

The light was bright, but diffused by cloud, so the shadows weren't harsh

Equipment

Sony A380 with Sigma 70-300mm lens handheld

Inspiration

I've had a picture of a stag on my wall for years and wanted one of my own to replace it

Editing

This almost straight out of the camera, I just brought the highlights down a little to stop the antlers blowing out, and increased the clarity a little to make them more prominent against the branches in the background

In my camera bag

I always carry my 18-70mm lens for landscapes and either my 70-300mm or 170-500mm for wildlife shots, plus my 50mm f1.7 for detail shots when I want a shallow depth of field. I upgraded my camera body in 2017 from the Sony A380 to the Sony A77v

Feedback

Watch your subject and anticipate where it's heading. Try to move closer slowly when the animal isn't watching you, if it looks up... freeze. Try to stay down wind from your subject as your scent will spook them long before the sight of you does
