While on a driving holiday in New Zealand, I saw this reflection on the Clutha River on the way to Alexandra. There is a look out on the road but looking over the lake. This reflection was breathtaking due to the Autumn colours, so I headed down the hill to find the perfect spot to take this photo. As I zoomed in I realised the depth in the colours and how mirrored the reflection actually was.Time
Beautiful mid morning, the sun was just coming over the mountains with snow still falling over head.Lighting
What was important with this photo, it gave me the chance to play with manual setting as well as auto. To capture the depth and colours in this photo I needed to make sure that the setting were adjusted to suit the changing light, due to clouds and shadows. This photo was taken at 1/320 F7.1 ISO 250Equipment
D7000 with nothing special just a AF-S nikkor 55-300mm 4.5-5.6G. No filter. Standard Nikon equipment.Inspiration
My inspiration was the beautiful colours of Autumn and the reflection created by the still water. New Zealand waters seem to produce crisp reflections in its mountain lakes and ponds. This photo was one of few taken of the same area. Most are a long shot of the lake, as I was trying to capture the landscape. This was my only one that was focused on pattern created by the trees lining the water.Editing
Ipad and Photoshop PF just to enhance the colours a little. Autophoto PF is an easy way to enhance your photo as an amateur, by allowing you to play with your photos without all of the chooses that Photoshop, Photoshop Elements and other photo editing software provide. In my camera bag
My bag is filled with a D7000, standard Nikon 55-300 lense, Nikon 18-55 lense, Nikkon Macro 105mm, Tanrom 150-600mm, crokin filters, a manfrotto tripod and of course my ipad with adapter.Feedback
The most important advice to give you is be prepared at all times, the world is a beautiful and magical place. You never know when you might find something you want to capture. Either for its great composition, wildlife or just something as impressive as a beautiful rainbow or sunset. My camera hiking bag is always filled with all of my lenses and needs for any situation. Patience and allowing yourself to move around to play with composition, lighting and angles helps in achieving a photo like this. The photo was taken off the usual tourist spot and I made sure I was just above eye level with the lake so to get the length in the reflection, angles and depth. Adjusting your camera from auto to manual will also give you the opportunity play with colours and depth. Just remember to play with position as well, move around and take photos from different positions. Good Luck and have fun.
