Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken at the 2014 Luke Days Air Show Matt Chapman in the yellow and blue Cap 580 Jack Knutson in the red Extra 300

Time

This shot was taken mid-day

Lighting

Purely sunlight

Equipment

Camera Canon EOS-1D X Canon 500mm f4 with 1.4 TCIII ISO 100 Focal Length 700mm Aperture f/7.1 Exposure Time 0.008s (1/125) Name Close-Turn.jpg

Inspiration

I'm an aviation photographer so any time top level aerobatic pilots are performing in my area I am shooting. This shot was a bit of a surprise not discovered til post processing it. The planes are extremely close together and the direction of travel looked like they were going to hit.

Editing

Crop and basic LR processing for color, sharpness, etc.

In my camera bag

(Changed a bit since the pic was taken) currently Canon and Sony stuff 1Dx mk2, A7rii, 70D 16-35 f4, 24-70 f2.8L II, 70-200 f2.8L II, 300mm f2.8L II, 500mm f4L II, 50mm 1.4, 100mm f2.8L, Zeiss 21mm f2.8, Tokina 11-16 f2.8 II, Samyang 14mm t3.1, 580 EXII flashes, Singh-Ray Variable ND, Heliopan Circ Polarizer, and LOTS more!

Feedback

Prop-driven aircraft beg for slow shutter speeds. This is a challenge when using long glass as it breaks the rule of focal length/shutter speed...well it actually demolishes it! This shot was taken at my "default" speed of 1/125. At 700mm this yielded very few keepers. I have shot with success down to 1/40...oh and I never use tripods! They are too restrictive at airshows. This is where the 1Dx's burst speed and AF tracking are invaluable. I have had luck with the 5D mk3 as well though. Practicing panning is the key to any aviation shots taken from the ground. As for the shot here...this was just lucky timing to catch the planes as close together as possible.
